The Vice President of Operations will provide strategic leadership of company functions, policies and processes that help drive growth and maximize achievement of business goals. The VP of Operations will serve as a member of the senior leadership team and will develop strategies to support a capable, engaged and energetic employee population. Key areas of responsibility include technical expertise, proactive leadership and guidance on all EHS and Transportation matters as well as implement the company’s new quality assurance initiatives program. Champion a safe work environment for employees and support and ensure a safety culture throughout the company. PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES Business Development / Proposal Management 1. Leads staff in the development of annual strategic plan for the region including the creation of both expense and capital budgets. 2. Leads staff in reviews of potential new facilities for operations efficiency and costing. 3. Collaborates with Business Development personnel in preparing proposals. Account Management / Contract Management 4. Manages Plant Managers/Project Managers to effectively execute existing contracts to achieve maximum profitability consistent with good business judgment and practice. 5. Actively participates in public forums to support Veolia goals and to enhance community education. 6. Ensures superior client relations: responds to customer needs and solicits client feedback 7. Solicits customer and sales input to gain an intimate understanding of customer needs, problems and systems in order to provide a complete solution 8. Improve levels of satisfaction, identify need for and implement corrective actions and to evaluate and develop new business opportunities 9. Ensures that customer requirements and deadlines are met Negotiations 10. Participates in negotiations of regional, multi-site and/or complex agreements 11. Oversees and manages change variations and negotiates and secures favorable renewal margins 12. Secures profitable scope changes Procurement 13. Leverages region resources to maximize purchasing power 14. Ensures compliance with legal requirements and company policies 15. Identifies and justifies capital expenditures Financial 16. Monitors region financial performance including compliance to cost center budget, personnel utilization, pricing, customer invoicing and collections 17. Identifies opportunities for improvement and guides team when corrections or improvements are needed 18. Consolidates and prepares monthly reports in a timely manner 19. Prepares annual budgets for region review 20. Ensures that region meets or exceeds plan 21. Forecasts monthly budget variances 22. Ensures timely collection of receivables Safety & Environmental Compliance 23. Promotes and models safety culture 24. Ensures plant compliance and adherence to OSHA, State and Veolia Safety and Environmental Programs Management/Human Resources 25. Staff development (cultivates individual talents, promotes and secures training resources, motivates successfully) 26. Leadership (builds relationships, facilitates team success, provides direction and delegates responsibly) 27. Guides the implementation of Human Resources policies, plans and programs for the region. 28. Identifies in conjunction with Training Department staff and HR, training needs and coordinates execution of training programs. 29. Monitors employee performance appraisal program in conjunction with HR to assure performance evaluations and goals are completed in a timely and meaningful manner. 30. Establishes standards of performance with key staff and monitors wage and benefit levels on a regional industry basis. Qualifications Education / Experience / Background ● Must have a four-year college or university degree in a related field; master’s degree in a related technical or business field desirable; ● Bilingualism (an asset). ● Minimum of ten years of experience in the management of utility systems, showing progressive steps of increased responsibility; ● Developed strategic and business planning and financial management skills including budget and cost control; ● Successful record with contract negotiations, multi-site interfaces, commercial management of contracts and sustained customer and regulatory satisfaction; ● Presents effectively and closes attainable sales opportunities; ● A proven track record of successfully delivering excellent customer satisfaction; Knowledge / Skills / Abilities ● Demonstrates effective sales skills; ● Must be effective in building partnerships and relationships with customers and able to modify communication and presentation style in order to relate to a variety of people and personalities; ● Demonstrate excellent communication skills: written, verbal, listening and presentation and show the ability to recognize and handle sensitive communications internally and with all levels of customers and suppliers ● Must be outgoing, self-directed, goal oriented and creative to be able to identify and maximize opportunities ● Demonstrates effective organizational and project management skills with attention to detail ● Demonstrate a high degree of initiative, judgment and resourcefulness with the ability to find creative solutions and options to multi-faceted and/or time sensitive problems, to deal with numerous and changing priorities and to proactively address issues relating to personnel, capital, margin enhancement, facilities, processes and profitability of assigned region. ● Demonstrates commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the Company’s Code of Business Conduct and other Company policies and procedures; ● Demonstrated leadership ability with an understanding of Human Resources principals; ● Knowledge of Safety, Environmental and health requirements; ● Facilities/ Capital Equipment Management; PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT Spends 40% of time in an office environment and 60% at projects and/or meetings. Occasional exposure to plant and field environment. Makes visits to existing and potential customer facilities. Frequent travel.
