Lead Operator

Under limited supervision, the operator provides for the safe operation of multiple water and wastewater facilities in compliance with federal, state, local and company requirements for the operation of water treatment, distribution, storage facilities and/or wastewater collection, lift stations or treatment facilities. Responsible for the operation, routine servicing and care of a wide variety of specialized equipment and apparatus in a plant/treatment facility including pumps, motors, chemical preparation and feeding; physical, chemical and biological wastewater treatment and/or water treatment processes; control equipment and monitoring equipment. Maintains records of operations, completes and submits routine and special reports as assigned. Inspects all mechanical equipment for proper operation, performs normal lubrication, adjustments, seal packing, minor maintenance and minor repairs as necessary. Performs related field and laboratory tests, which are necessary to monitor and control the facilities, and makes necessary adjustments to equipment, processes and chemical feeders, as test results may indicate and as instructed by the Supervisor.
RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES:
Responsible for startup, shutdown, operation and periodic checks of water and wastewater treatment processes, components and equipment at water and wastewater facilities.
Adjustments of plant equipment such as pumping systems, chemical feeders, auxiliary equipment, and control systems storage tank levels and pump stations indicators.
Perform routine preventative maintenance such as operating adjustments, cleaning and painting equipment.
Perform routine maintenance of plant grounds and buildings such as painting, cleaning, snow removal, and other repairs.
Load and unload chemicals used at the treatment plant.
Perform corrective maintenance on plant mechanical equipment.
Maintain plant records such as operating logs, chemical feeds, temperature, levels, and pressures on various process systems and associated equipment located throughout plant facilities.
Monitor flows, pressures, chemical feeds, levels and water quality indicators.
Collect water/wastewater samples and perform laboratory tests.
Record all operating data on daily work sheet from laboratory analysis and flow metering equipment.
Conduct safety inspections and follow safety rules and procedures.
Communicate effectively with other operators and supervisors on the technical level expected for the position.
Must be available for overtime and on call as well as minimal weekend and holiday coverage.
Work in all weather conditions. Must be able to drive during snowy conditions.
Performs field service work such as water main repairs, water meter change-outs, fire hydrant repairs, valve maintenance etc.
Interact with fellow employees and the public, in a professional can courteous manner at all times
Requirements
Strong mechanical aptitude.
Ability to be on call for emergencies.
Graduation from high school or equivalent; must have the ability to perform mathematical calculations related to the job with speed and accuracy, and communicate effectively both orally and written.
Minimum C level water or wastewater operator license in Colorado or from another state and the ability to obtain Colorado licenses within 6 months.
At least 3 years of experience in the water/wastewater treatment field.
Knowledge of the principles and safe practices of wastewater or water distribution, pumping, collection, and treatment, each as they may apply to his area. A solid understanding of the mechanical, chemical and biological processes and related equipment, as well as an awareness and alertness regarding operational modification, which may be necessary in both routine and emergency situations, is required. Intermediate level of computer literacy – Excel, Word, SCADA etc.
