This Opportunity
WSP is seeking an Assistant Vice President, Environmental Engineer to join our Earth & Environment remediation team in Costa Mesa, CA. We are looking for a candidate with significant consulting experience and technical expertise who is excited about the opportunity to be a part of a growing organization. The selected candidate will provide subject matter technical support and leadership for a broad range of environmental engineering services including multi-site/phase environmental assessment and remediation, water/wastewater engineering, water resources, environmental compliance, remedial design and implementation of innovative remediation technologies, stormwater management, and hazardous waste management.
Your Impact
- Direct and provide oversight for data collection efforts including collecting, identifying, and compiling environmental data from samples of air, soil, water, sludge, and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys.
- Perform professional environmental engineering work and conduct more complex/comprehensive site investigations, hazardous or solid waste facilities, water supply facilities, industrial and agricultural facilities, pollution sources and proposed and existing site conditions, water resources, and underground storage tanks to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
- Lead environmental site assessments (Phase I and II).
- Assist with engineering review of permit applications, engineering design plans and specifications, standby plans and engineering contracts, integrated waste management plans, and periodic construction inspections, to ensure that they comply with applicable state and/or federal regulations and sound engineering practice and standards.
- Meet with various public or private entities or individuals to discuss issues relating to a variety of environmental problems and programs.
- Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, clean-up, or address environmental issues or problems.
- Develop action plans for larger-scale pollution, corrosion, hazardous waste, and environmental control programs.
- Lead larger-scale engineering projects ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, monitoring external events, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring satisfactory performance, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.
- Develop a client base for providing high level environmental engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities
- Mentor staff to support their growth and professional development. Remain current in latest environmental engineering techniques.
- Collaborates with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental engineering, or closely related Engineering discipline. BS degree must be received from ABET accredited University.
- 10 years of relevant post education experience in civil or environmental engineering. Professional Civil Engineer license in California required.
- 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) required.
- Highly proficient with engineering principles, practices, and methods and their application to environmental remediation and project work-related issues.
- Strong knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, and compliance practices.
- Experienced with planning and conducting site investigations, feasibility studies, treatability studies and pilot tests, remedial design, remedial implementation, environmental permitting, treatment system construction, and operation and maintenance of various types of treatment facilities or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies.
- Proficiency with various remediation technologies and strategies to address a variety of contaminants for soil, soil vapor, groundwater, and surface water.
- Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally, persuasively, and tactfully with clients, regulators, project managers, and employees at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to provide guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior -level team or project members and mentor junior staff, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Proficiency with technical writing, providing critical review for documents, and preparing technical deliverables and plans with a high degree of complexity.
- Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solutions.
- Experienced with managing projects, including management of contracts, scope, schedule, and budget, and client and stakeholder interaction.
- Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment. - Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Engineering
- Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Compensation
Expected Salary (California): $130,100- $193,380
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
