Desalinated Water

Published on by in Technology

At my work we are utilizing small reverse osmosis pumps having a pumping handle which takes saltwater through a membrane trapping solids and impurities. As result only water is passed through the membrane. Our pumps produces 90 litres a day. Can this idea be modified and used in Industry to produce more desalinated water per day?

Yes, this is in general how large-size reverse osmosis desalination plants work as well. The water is pumped through reverse osmosis memrbanes at pressure adequate to overcome the osmotic pressure which is determined by water salinity and the recovery target. At the Desalination Group internet site we have informaiton that discusses this process in a greater detail. Please join the group and you will get access to this and other information that will help you understand the principles, costs, energy and other factors associated with full-scale desalination plants.
