Hazard Modeling Programs
Published on by Gillian Beck, President, Dancing Waters Consulting, LLC in Technology
I recently learned Hazus, an American hazard modelling program to estimate potential losses from earthquakes, floods, tsunamis and hurricanes, for use in mitigation, recovery, preparedness and response.
I am interested in equivalent programs used in other countries, especially across Europe.

Hi Gillian,
I have some experience in tsunami hazard mitigation. We usually use specific nimerical model such as COMCOT or TUNAMI to accommodate tsunami wave propagation as well as run ups and inundation. You can also use MIKE or Dleft 3D or FUNWAVE for comparison.
Just an addition, for tsunami modeling sometimes the computation takes too much time if you need to accommodate several tsunami genration scenario which may not be good for quick mitigation scheme. Therefore some method like building tsunami model database where you store several scenario on the database and re call it whenever needed has been developed by my Supervisor at University (ITB, Indonesia). Hope this help.

Hi Gillian,
I conducted my master's studies and research in Europe (Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Slovenia), with a focus on flood risk management. In terms of flood hazard modeling, a few of the common software options we used were the suite of MIKE Powered by DHI products (MIKE11, MIKE21, MIKE Urban, MIKE SHE, etc.), HEC-RAS (this is the USACE software, but it is free to use and download, so is not unusual to see outside of the USA), MODFLOW (USGS, for groundwater modeling), and the Deltares SOBEK Suite. I should note that these are all focused on flood hazard , so as far as I know none of them directly include projected loss estimation components, but the results could (and are) used to inform damage projections/estimates.
I remember meeting a gentleman from Italy at the 2017 European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction who I believe was working with a multi-hazard platform. It may have been related to the ESPREssO (Enhancing Synergies for disaster PRevention in the EurOpean Union) project, but I regret to say that I don't remember the specific tool they were using/building.
Good luck with your search!
Best,
Maryellen

Thank you for your response, Maryellen. I am familiar with MIKE and HEC RAS, although I have only used the latter. I will look at the other programmes you mentioned - although, as you say, they do not deal with risk. Thank you for nudging me towards EFDRR where there is a wealth of information, but not a date for the 2018 forum.
Best,
Gillian

I recently heard the next EFDRR will be 21-23 November 2018 in Italy, though I don't yet know which city.
Best,
