How to Remove Bauxite from Water?
Published on by Rakshit P, Co-founder at Nirvahana in Academic
Bauxite mining in Kalahandi, a district in Orissa State of India, has led to heavy water pollution.
Can anyone suggest cheap bauxite removal methods?
What is your experience with different options for bauxite removal from water?

Hi Rakshit - Bauxite mining water is likely a mix of Aluminium and suspended solids. Depending upon the specific demands you are facing, utilising an electro-coagulation technology, clarification and pH correction system can be very effective.
Do you have more info on the following:
1. Water analysis of the raw water to be treated
2. Treated water parameter requirements & use (ie potable drinking water, irrigation, discharge to local water course)
3. Volume of wastewater generated per day.As I am confident I will be able to assist you.
Kind regards
Simon

Bauxite is mineral. It will pollute water as some suspended matter or dissolved chemical
Check the water analysis as to what dissolved solids are added & to what level, by the mineral
then accordingly treatment can be decided

The Earth Sustaining Sciences SABR process will all-naturally economically solve your Bauxite in water problem intergenerationally. Please see the web site at www.earthsustainingsciences.com.

Green Age specializes in mining waters. We have a 100% mechanical (active) reclamation process that is very effective with aluminum. I have shared some data from our fall pilot on a Legacy Mine in Colorado. Please take a look at the mine 3 data... last page. aluminum levels post buffer thru crushed Limestone (45 min retention). Here are links to the data. Accredited data available on request.

Some kind of pond to allow particulate settling might help also.

gypsum is apparently the way to go: CaSO4 + 2NaOH = Na2SO4 + Ca(OH)2
CaSO4 + Na2CO3 = Na2SO4 + CaCO3
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 = CaCO3 + H2O
This might flocculate the bauxite reidues. However I am not mining residue or water specialist. I just know quite a bit of chemistry.

The cheapest way to remove any pollution is usually to avoid it in the first place. I'm not expert on bauxite mining but the questions I would start with are things like:
How is the bauxite mining causing pollution?
Is there any way the processes can be changed to prevent the pollution?
What would the cost of implementing mitigation measures be compared to the cost of removing the pollution from the river?
Is there anyway to turn this problem into an opportunity?
Hope this helps

Dear Rakshit,
firstly I would need to know if there is any kind of treatment of the Orissa District. Is there any drinking water plant and / or desalinatioon plant to treat that flow?
Or your question is to try to remove the bauxite from your tap water?
Thank you

Can you use Ferric chloride as a coagulant and drop it out that way? It would reduce the PH as well. I am assuming you have a thickener or digester of some sort for the sludge?
