Sensors for Real-time data acquisition for water distribution systems.
Published on by Mohammad Islam, PhD, P. Eng, Employee at Inframan Inc in Technology
Could anyone give advice about best available pressure and flow sensors for real-time data acquisition for water distribution systems?
Which one is the best for a medium size district metering area (DMA) and why? If someone has these sensors to offer, please share the technical details.

Hi Mohammad,
i2O has a number of mobile network enabled flow and pressure data loggers that are used throughout the world. You can take a look at what we offer on our website (https://en.i2owater.com/solutions/dnet/) and let me know if you would like some client references or have any more questions for me. I have also attached our Thought Piece on 'Buying Loggers'. It may help guide you whilst you make your purchasing decision.
Best regards,
Dave

Some of the Dutch regional water authorities use the TMX system to monitor and control their water system. As far as I know it is quite simple and basic technique. It is possible to connect with other systems and you can make exports of the measurement values. I found some information in English.

Hi Mohammad,
Ours is a Netherlands based company ( Optiqua Technologies ) which sells sensors that monitor water quality on a real-time basis. It is called EventLab , an online generic sensor to monitor the overall stability of the water quality in real time. It detects changes in Refractive Index (RI) of water. RI responds to any change in the chemical composition of the water, and EventLab will therefore respond to any contamination. EventLab responds in the low ppm range and strongly outperforms (any combination of) traditional sensors for the purpose of contamination detection. It is low maintenance and does not require calibration.
This will be most vital for your distribution systems. Attached White paper has explanation.
I would highly appreciate if we could have the opportunity to present our technology to you in more detail. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions.
I look forward to your feedback.
With kind regards,
Raghuveer.

Hi Mohammad,
what kind of communication do you prefer to acquire field data from the sensors. If you want wireless system, you should consider RPMA and I know there were plans for covering Toronto.
Using the same RPMA Machine Network we delivered water pipeline pressure monitoring for some water utilities.
If you are interesting, I can provide more comprehensive report. In the meantime you can check about RPMA:http://www.ingenu.com/solutions/industries/smart-city/
and about our pressure sensor:
http://koncar-inem.hr/en/products/ict/smart-metering/water-pressure-monitoring/
In order to preserve battery lifetime, we have built in some smart functions like reporting by exemption triggered by different alarms like low-high thresholds and RoC.

Hi Mohammad,
my company Blue Gold (www.blue-gold.it) is specialized on energy optimization of water distribution systems. As Grundfos business partner, we provides worldwide valuable information and services in order to:
locate water leakage aligned with the accuracy that customers want to reach
define the best "energy districts" in order to save the most operational costs and keep the proper level of service
define the proper setup of pump stations and tanks to reduce energy consumptions and CO2 emissions
Our solution includes advanced algorithms and innovative pressure loggers that can be connected with every flow meter. The loggers has been concepted for cheap, fast and massive installations.
Please have a look on our website where you can find the logger datasheet and don't hesitate to go back to me for any kind of additional info you may need.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Best Regards

Hi Mohamed
I suggest you have a look at the Smart LEA from Blue I Technologies - you will be very very impressed. My company handles the product in our region but not in North America. Blue I has its own operations in the US.
If you need an introduction, I'm happy to help.
Regards
Phil
