I joined TWN after reading a discussions on fracking. I want to know what is hydrofracking, what chemicals are used in this technology and why some People are opposing this technology? Looking forward to learn more on water Network. Sab

  1. I strongly oppose hydro fracking, why dont we look at the adverse envionmental effects it has? The energy requirement is high and the environmental damage is also very high.

  2. There are many advantages of Hydro fracking, but the main is that it is the only way to extract the maximum oil and natural gas out of existing wells and to feed the needs of an energy hungry world. But the evnvironmentalist are worried for the waste water and the chemical used. It will be good to see that what other has to say about it. In my opinion the energy consumption is huge in this process and what we get in return is less.

I also liked the new discussion on hydro-fracking on TWN. Now as you have asked the hydrofracking or hydrofracturing is a form of natural gas extraction in which a pressurized mix of water and other substances is injected into shale rock formations or coal beds to release trapped natural gas. A fluid mixture of water and chemicals is injected under high pressure deep underground, creating or widening fissures in the rock. Then, sand or another solid, often ceramic beads, is pumped in to keep the fissures propped open so that methane gas can escape from pores and fractures in the rock. The fluid used in fracking is mostly water, some acids, emulsifiers and other chemicals are added to make the water more viscous and effective at fracturing the rock. These include guar gum, boron, zirconium, titanium, iron and polyacrylamide. Lot more is talked on advantages and disadvantages of the technology. While reading on internet I came across this article. This may anwers many of your question. http://www.haynesboone.com/files/Uploads/Documents/Attorney%20Publications/Understanding-Hydraulic-Fracturing-Issues-Challenges-and-Regulatory-Regime.pdf Cheers.
