In Search of an Accurate, Easy to Use, Handheld Ozone PPM Sensor

Roving Blue is an early commercial stage company in the business of manufacturing electrolytic ozone generators to dissolve 03 into water.  In the past we have used colormetric kits to determine ozone levels.

While these have served us well for general purposes, we have had complaints from OEM companies testing our components about false positive results, etc.

Does anyone here have a suggestion about any devices (ideally, handheld), which would give accurate ozone ppm levels? ).

We would certainly welcome your suggestions.  Thank you!

  1. Use the ozo::lyser from s::can. Their sensors are very relyable. Just for the record, I have no stake in that company.

  2. Yes, Hach has recently updated its DR300 Pocket Colorimeter, with improved connectivity and data transfer capabilities.  It can measure 17 different parameters, including ozone.  Please visit the Hach.com website for more info, or call 1.800.227.4224.  A datasheet is attached here for your info as well.

  3. Hello Mariana; Ozone abilities have been known for a while. These days it is used as a last resort if the purification system has no access to modern technology or a perceived high cost of this new technology. A current drawback on the use of ozone is the elimination of the beneficial nutrients in the water. Those nutrients have to be added back or the "cleaned water" itself will become a secondary toxin meaning the lack of natural nutrients are missing. Sort of like sailors on naval ship many years ago  went for years on voyages with no fruit. But they did not get the minimal amount of nutrients to maintain their health. Identical to ozone.  Fortunately nature already has a perfect solution. In natures recycling system their is zero waste. Microbes from the RNA microbial group biodegrade the waste to the elemental state. No residue. Only nutrients they are needed to keep all life forms working within their established parameters.  Those "toxic metals" will be chelated by the same group. So if the primary question is device to measure Ozone ppm levels my answer is why? If clean potable drinking water regardless of the waste in it can be cost effectively applied then the answer is yes.  Kinda makes the water shortages around the world look like a man made crisis. Easily fixable and for pennies.

    1. Ozone has its place just like all chemicals do.  I want a way to measure it in water, as our customers wish to achieve certain levels for their needs. Our electrolytic ozone generators are simple and inexpensive, so I am challenged with finding a sensor that is the same.

      1. I understand Yana. I never use any chemicals.  May I suggest if a company can not be found then go to a local university and present the challenge to them.  Your specs, your patent, your sales.  If you ever need anything environmental related just give me a call. 512-567-9700.

    2. can you please elaborate more on what do you mean by ozone eliminating beneficial nutrients? it looks to me that you are confusing ozone technology to RO.

      1. Not at all Chedly. In all Ozone technology complex compounds are reduced into less complex compounds. The next step or protocol is to filter the remaining biosolids regardless of how small. In order to accomplish this a membrane filter is used. Membrane technology is very advanced and quite effective. It will filter out the residue down to the stated micron size of the membrane.  Yes all of these technologies work. But when people are suffering a higher priority should be placed on most effective and as little cost as possible.  Even turning a waste into a product for profit that will pay for itself in 1 or 2 years.  Excellent question Chedly!

HAVE YOU SEARCHED HACH ANALYZERS. THEY HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS AND MOST MAJOR WATER TREATMENT COMPANIES USE HACH.  LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE A FURTHER QUESTION PLEASE. WEB: KERNDYNAMICS.COM FOR EMAIL.  RON
