MBBR Tank Deph

Published on by in Technology

Hi Everyone what is the minimum tank depth for MBBR Reactor, all I can see is 3.5 meter minimum,  if possible I want to design a 2 meter or less for a small capacity MBBR reactor  to make it portable,  --- Cheers Frank..

  1. The tank depth is solely a function of the pressure of the aerators and the efficiency of the gas transfer.  You can run a SBR with shallow surface aerators, but it tends to be more work.  So, depth is not the driving issue.  Detention time and tank volume are more important for COD/BOD removal.  That said, you do have to have some mixing in the tank, but the details are up to you.  Curiously enough most systems in the US are designed with aerator depths of around 12 feet (3.7 meters) because that's the best pressure/delivery point for single stage compressors.

  2. Hi Everyone, Thanks for the information.. Great help... cheers

  3. Typically, each MBBR has a length-to-width ratio (L:W) in the range 0.5:1 to 1.5:1. Plans with a L:W greater than 1.5:1 can result in the free-moving plastic biofilm carriers being non-uniformly distributed throughout the bioreactor. As a result, the system is subjected to poor oxygen transfer efficiency and reduced hydraulic capacity of the plastic biofilm carrier retention screens.

  4. Once fine bubbles are generated by diffuse aeration, fine air bubbles travels upward. Longer the contact time better the oxygen transfer. Yes you can design the tank of 2 m depth.  However you may have to add more oxygen.

  5. Simply put,  more depth allows more oxygen diffusion but consumes more blower energy. Therefore, it's a trade-off and a depth of 2m - 4m is optimally maintained.

  6. 40+ years of experience in STPs: The only item You loose is the oxydation capacity as a cbm air gives certain amount of grams DO per immersion meter upto 6 to 7 m of depth. This is why

You loose in aeartion power consumption, only! Br AbuIlkka

  7. As far as i know, your tank dimensions depend on the amount of BOD/COD you want to remove which directly influences the amount of media volume needed.  You have to provide enough volume to accommodate this media volume you selected.
