Minimum water Holding volume for Dam Intake Well

Question

What should be minimum holding capacity of water in the Intake Well of a river or a Dam ?
Please answer in terms of say 5 minutes or 7 minutes etc. What is the basis of this minimum time ?

If the pump is used in the well - the (useful) volume of the well (between pump low and pump high levels) should be calculated so that the pump starts and stops no more than six (6) times  per hour to protect the pump motor.
