Minimum water Holding volume for Dam Intake Well

What should be minimum holding capacity of water in the Intake Well of a river or a Dam ?

Please answer in terms of say 5 minutes or 7 minutes etc. What is the basis of this minimum time ?

  1. That is the retention time you are after and depending upon your pump selection can be designed between 5 to 10 minutes. This is to avoid turning on and off the pump. However, in order to avoid that you can use VFD to modulate the frequency of the motor to speed up and down the pump based on the level and flow to smooth out the pump operation.

  2. If the pump is used in the well - the (useful) volume of the well (between pump low and pump high levels) should be calculated so that the pump starts and stops no more than six (6) times  per hour to protect the pump motor.
