Seeking Machinery to Remove Sludge from Under a 20 meter Long Bridge
Published on by Thanikachalamurthi Aruchamy, Organic Farmer | Water Conservationist | Volunteer on Water body cleanup and Restoration in Technology
The river water passes through a wide water channel in the city limits to reach the pond, the channel has more bridge, intersecting the roads of 20 - 30 meter wide.
Since the river passes through the lively hood - the sludge were deposited, garbage and waste are blocking the water flow.
The blocking stuffs were removed on the open area, but could not even attempt to remove the sludge under the bridge.
We measured that the sludge deposited is about 1-2 meter high through out the 20 meter tunnel/ bridge.
Seeking the experts help, of how to remove ? - Which machinery or any other manual tools to remove the same.
Attached are the pictures for reference.
Also, please note that, removing the sludge/debris after a decade time means - allowing the river water to a 100 acre pond - Which recharges the underground water for 10,000 acres of agricultural land.
Thanks
Murthi

Dear Murthi.
1..Without affecting the present road usage, the desilting job is to be done- to clear 20m x 3m 60 cbm will become 100 cbm of sludge Etc..
2. Sloping road lanes are to be done to bring in mechanical JCBs and removal of sludge matter. etc.. on 4 places.
3. Once the job is completed the road lanes to be lined with stones and firmed for doing cleanup easily in future too ..
4. In the upstream areas. at locations where streams joinbwith main river, large du g outs are planned and done.
This would assist all sludges to be dredged / desilted regularly.
All the sludges removed need to be co composted to produce manure Etc..

To avoid the problem in the future I suggest you HUBER TrashMax screen for this kind of solids.

Larry Landry - Sorry I did not understand.

Hi, a vacuum tanker working from both sides of the bridge would be best. The water is very black looking so clearly anaerobic. There will be smell issues. Better use a tanker with dewatering capability so you only remove the solids.

Hi. If the removed matter is more bio matter.. let it dry for a few weeks and then co compost it with cow dung and bio mass ... It is a great soil additive full of nutrirnts .. good for agri farms .. well wishes ..

Hi.
At best you have Mr Menon wanting to assist you with a good machine.
You need to line up as to how the removed sludge is disposed ex trucks to dump yards.. cb m how much..
Of course decide on his expenses. It seems simple..
Well wishes .

Yes Grant Leslie . But we need to dilute the sediment deposited in the bridge before we suck.
The sediment is almost like a concrete settlement.

is this project in Coimbatore? do you want a biological solution? you can rent a unit from Naveen Juneja +919582929200

I did contacted Naveen.
He mentioned only a permanent bio-equipment to be placed inside the bridge, which costs about
USD $60000, which is not a cost effective approach.
I have requested a temporary setup just to dilute the sediment and remove.
Thanks

Thanks Eros Kaw , will contact Naveen.

Toufiq Mirza - Thanks for the reply.
I need to know if this is possible by any available machineries or any special techniques to be used ?
Will reach you, once I have good ideas/knowledge about it.
-
Like the canal restorer systems developed by John Todd, you can lay down a series of hoses on the bottom and create a fine bubble pattern of pumped air that will 'oxidize' the sludge. In about a month or so you may have resolved your problem using the aerobic microbes that develop.

Correct. Lengths of hose with very small holes for aeration, and a pump to force air through the hoses.
-
Hi Taber Hand - Thanks for the suggestion.
It would be great, if I have a pictorial representation of the same.
Series of hoses - You mean, just length pipes on the sludge ?
Thanks
Murthi
