Great conversation to advance this crucial topic!
This is a great conversation to engage in, as it affects everyone who does anything where others are involved. Transactions involving materials, knowledge, funds require some degree of trust, and that is earned by reputation. Collaboration is a knowledge transaction, one of the best and most nurturing, but to put in your own ideas with others' requires even more trust, knowing that intellectual capital is far more valuable than any financial transaction. Whether working with colleagues or customers, there is a big part of yourself and your own reputation in the transaction. Social media tools, used correctly, can help build or tear down reputations, sometimes in a matter of seconds, and on a wider scale than F2F business interaction.
I have heard is said that the "big three" for a small business are LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. But they must be approached professionally, always remembering that even on your personal side, what you do represents and affects your business. When you want to reach more people, there is no longer any such thing as "private" vs. "public" personae. Everything you do matters. When was the last time you Googled your own name?
There is a book, mostly for business, that addresses some of these issues: "Trust Agents:Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust" by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith. I recommend it for an overview--deeper exploration is just not out there yet, but conversations like these will certainly help...

I agree,
I partly work as an advisor/consultant and I partly am cto for a holding.
I am very selective, trust is the keyfactor on which I select. After that, other factors become relevant; but the first selection has been made.
By means of social media, I express that explicitely and everyone can see how I work.
