Which filter types are best for recycling laundry grey water?

Published on by in Case Studies

Hello we will use filters to recycle grey water at our labs. We intend to buy filters to recycle grey water of laundry and reuse it for other applications. These applications can be cleaning up the ground. Not irrigation. What do you suggest?

Thank you!

  1. Your question is very vague, since it does not give analytical profile of the laundry grey water & the quality parameters of the recycle water & its application. The analytical parameters must at least specify COD & TDS loads in target grey water & also in recycle grade water.

However it can definitely be said that NF & RO can be very much suitable for your purpose, since the cut off parameters of such membranes are mostly suitable for making the permeate suitable for reuse.

Ultrafiltration can be useful only to a limited extent.

  2. Suggest you run a simple risks assessment looking at the source of water, end use and means of controlling both in and out water. Can you control the incoming water quality? Can you control the use of product water? What are the risks? That should determine the thinking about the treatment process required. Then you can make an informed decision on the treatment requirements. Otherwise - it is like shooting in the dark skies...

  3. Hi Asegul,

so the suggestions below range from a simple bag filter system to a multi-stage filtration, UF, ozonation and carbon filtration.  Please be aware that the simple systems are okay if you re-use the water within 24 hours and the water quality is acceptable for the specific use, otherwise you must go to at least include ozonation and probably activated carbon.

  4. Hi Aysegul,

Best process from 20 years experience  with grey water treatment for re-use

In order is basket screen for lint hair removal, particle filtration, ultrafiltration, pH correction then ozone and a biological activated carbon filter .  The biologically activated carbon enables reduction of soaps surfactants  and organics.

Ozone breaks down the organics, soaps and surfactants.

The beneficial bacteria that will inhabit the activated carbon filter will periodically require a backwash to limit over population clogging the vessel.  The activated carbon removes or changes O3 to O2 and makes the activated carbon aerobic filtration.

With ozone you will need an ozone in air alarm that shuts down the plant if there is an ozone leak.  Any tank filled and emptied with ozonated water will need an ozone destruct vent to change O3 to O2 and keep the air free of ozone

If this is for a commercial project.  There must be a residual chlorine in the product water

    All the best

    Cheers Mark

  5. I would think your filter choice would depend on water quality (in and out), flow,  and how much effort you are willing to put into maintenance.

I would think a couple of basket strainers sized to meet you maintenance interval would be enough to remove lint and would be a good first stage cleaning.

Oh, DIY zip-tie women's stocking to end of hose to catch lint.

Would need more information to come up with a good answer.

  6. It would be my suggestion to have a typical water sample analyzed to determine contaminants that are in the water.  Identify what quality of water you need for the other applications and then evaluate a treatment recipe.

  7. This is one option that can be considered. Visit this site for a DIY booklet on constructed wetlands. Also look up the study by Samanta Stelli that she completed on constructed wetlands. this may give you some ideas. 8. Hi

I went on a tour several years ago of a I university that used Grey water from laundry and the issues they had was the soaps in the laundry caused the filters to be changed frequently. Filtering is necessary, but I believe Ozone is needed to clean the water. It is commonly used in laundry currently and is very effective.

  9. Hello Aysegul,

From my experience, the best option is disc filter + ultrafiltration. it provides good quality for most application. My company is expert on this application. If you are interested, you can contact me.
