Advocacy to Ensure Adaptive Capacity and Environmental Governance in Jordanian Communities that Host Syrian Refugees
The Royal Scientific Society (RSS) is the largest applied research institution, consultancy, and technical support service provider in Jordan and is a regional leader in the fields of science and technology.
The project aims at enhancing the adaptive capacity and environmental governance in Jordanian communities that host Syrian refugees through empowering civil society organizations and enhancing opportunities of inclusive engagement of the local community, particularly women and youth, in addressing and advocating for the main environmental challenges facing their society. The project merged out of the fact of the ongoing influx of refugees from Syria into Jordan which is placing a heavy burden on the already strained services and resources in Jordanian host communities, particularly in the northern areas of Jordan.
- The Royal Scientific Society (RSS) will conduct several meetings in the targeted area with a certain environmental CSOs with focusing on women-led organizations,
- A project launching/ introduction workshop,
- Formulation of an advocacy group from all targeted groups,
- Assessment of current status on issues related to environment challenges,
- Capacity building: based on the main findings of the situational analysis, training modules will be developed and will target the advocacy group,
- Development of a training technical manual: A technical manual that describes all training modules will be developed in cooperation with the selected CSO. This will be developed in Arabic and will be endorsed by the Ministry of Social Development to be considered as a tool for knowledge transfer among different communities and CSOs,
- Knowledge transfer: A selected group of minimum of ten members will transfer the knowledge gained to minimum of three CSO’s,
- Development of a road map: the formulated advocacy group with representatives from the trained CSO’s will develop a road map to handle various environmental challenges, and will advocate negotiating it with the local governmental organizations, and try to allocate the resources needed for implementation. Follow up meetings will be conducted to adopt the road map by the Ministry of Social Affairs and implement it in other areas after the project phases out. This will again contribute in sustaining the project outputs,
- Final workshop: A final workshop will be organized to present final findings and recommendations of the project. All stakeholders will be invited to participate. Feedback from the workshop will be considered, and the final report will be developed accordingly.

Notable Community Participation
- The local community including youth, women and representatives from several environmental CSOs will be part of the project launching workshop as well as project final workshop, - They will be targeted in the capacity building trainings on different technical and non-technical topics, - They will part of the advocacy group that will be the driving force for conducting various activities, and will update the relevant governorate/municipality on regular basis, - They will be participate in the focus group discussions to assess the current environmental status, - Minimum ten members of the selected group form a task force who, in cooperation with the project team, will transfer the knowledge gained to minimum of three CSO’s, - The formulated advocacy group with representatives from the trained CSO’s will develop a road map to handle various environmental challenges, and will advocate negotiating it with the local governmental organizations, and try to allocate the resources needed for implementation. Follow up meetings will be conducted to adopt the road map by the Ministry of Social Affairs and implement it in other areas after the project phases out.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
A technical manual that describes all training modules will be developed in cooperation with the selected CSO. This will be developed in Arabic and in a simple terminology. The manual will be endorsed by the Ministry of Social Development and will be considered as a tool for knowledge transfer among different communities and CSOs. This will contribute in sustaining the project outputs on the mid and long run.
