About
I have 34 years direct experience in industrial water management including sales, project management, auditing, research & development and technical training. I have been involved in the design, optimisation and troubleshooting of many key utility processes across a variety of industries including power and the petrochemical sector. Specific areas of expertise include heat exchanger efficiency evaluation, localised corrosion management, scale inhibition and the development of predictive performance tools. In my current role I engage in the strategic direction of Ecolab’s water and energy related innovation with a particular emphasis on enabling our customers to meet the challenges associated with water scarcity and water quality constraints while minimizing the financial and environmental impact. I have a particular interest in the complex interrelationships that exist between water, energy and productivity and how digital twins of industrial processes can provide unique insights into making 'more for less'. This is central to the role of water in sustainable production and the circular economy. I also have a passion for bringing water stewardship principles to complex industrial sites in vulnerable watersheds. This includes a deepening understanding of the vital role of wetlands as these are where water, climate and biodiversity most strongly converge. Fundamental to “sustainable water use” are the environmental flows that enable long-term health of wetlands at specific locations. These 'thresholds of resilience' are key to the EU's Water Resilience Strategy. I participated on the ISO Standard Committee for Water Footprinting (ISO 14046) representing The Netherlands and am very supportive of the Alliance for Water Stewardship/World Wildlife Fund in their roll out of a voluntary certification program for water managers. This included the first certification for the AWS Standard, aimed at lessening the industrial impacts on Lake Taihu in China, a primary water source for over 33 million people. Since 2017, I have led Water Europe’s Cluster Theme ‘Water Smart Industry’ and have chaired the Community of Practice since October 2024. Water Europe was initiated by the European Commission in 2004. The objective here is to foster collaborative initiatives within cross industry sectors; create an enabling environment for water related RTD (projects) and innovation, and pro-actively raise the importance of the water sector. I also have engaged in several wastewater recycle projects in Europe and the Middle East.

It was a pleasure to contribute to the Economist Impact Water Summit and to the discussion on financing water resilience.
One point was clear: when water risks are measurable and understood, action and investment follow.
Data, clear targets and circular water strategies are essential to move from intent to impact. Building a water‑resilient future will require collaboration across industry, finance and policy.
The tools and knowledge are there. The next step is scaling action.
Thank you to Economist Impact and all the participants for a thoughtful and constructive dialogue.
#econwater #ECLteamGetting closer to Economist Impact Event's Water Summit!
I’m looking forward to joining industry leaders in London to highlight a core message: water is a catalyst for business resilience, innovation and long‑term value creation.
At the Summit, I’ll contribute to the roundtable workshop on The Power of Water: Financing Water Resilience, exploring how smarter investment, clearer governance and circular water strategies can unlock meaningful progress for industry.
Proud to represent Ecolab as we help companies move from awareness to action, turning water stewardship into a strategic advantage.

💧 How can we solve Europe’s growing water crisis?
December 8th is the EU’s first Water Resilience Forum, taking place in Brussels.
I’ll be on stage for the session Financing the way to water resilience, to discuss how we can turn the European Water Resilience Strategy into action. The Forum begins at 10:00, and my session will kick off at 11:30.
For me, the key to a water-resilient future is investing in innovation, water efficiency, improving governance based on reliable data and cross-sector collaboration.
I strongly believe that strategic investment and financial innovation are key to unlocking the full value of water in Europe. Both public and private investments must be mobilised to safeguard water resources. Sustainable and scalable financing models are more urgent than ever to deliver on the ambitions of the Water Resilience Strategy.
Join the discussion and hear insights from policymakers, scientists, industry leaders, and civil society as we shape the path to a water-resilient Europe. 🌍

The European Commission Water Resilience Strategy is here — with a bold goal: a #WaterResilient Europe by 2030.
On Tuesday, we brought together leading voices, Sophie Trémolet (OECD - OCDE), Pernille Weiss-Ehler (European Commission), Hildegard Bentele (European Parliament), Henk Ovink (Global Commission on the Economics of Water), Magdalena Rzeczkowska (Federacja Przedsiębiorców Polskich), our very own Geoff Townsend and Agnese Danelon — to a roundtable focused on one critical question: how do we finance this transformation?
The message was clear: achieving water resilience requires coordinated #investment and cross-sector #collaboration.
Three priorities emerged:
✅ Clear policy signals
✅ Harmonized data
✅ Scalable financing models
At Ecolab, we are committed to advancing solutions that drive measurable impact. Because water isn’t just an environmental issue — it’s a business imperative. Let’s join forces to accelerate Europe’s water resilience.Geoff Townsend reposted this
