Optimizing Pharmaceutical Water Treatment: Integrating Membrane Technologies, Microbial Risk Management, and Artificial Intelligence

## Introduction
Veolia Water Technologies’ Orion™ system offers an integrated approach to pharmaceutical water production, combining reverse osmosis (RO), continuous electrodeionization (CEDI), and other treatment options to meet demanding water-quality requirements. Further opportunities for optimization may arise from integrating membrane technologies, microbial risk assessment, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

## Potential Treatment Optimization
Evaluating ultrafiltration (UF) and ultraviolet (UV) treatment upstream of RO, together with an additional UV unit immediately upstream of CEDI, could help manage particulate and microbial loading and mitigate biofouling risks. However, the benefits depend on feedwater characteristics, system configuration, UV dose, and operational conditions. These modifications should therefore be evaluated against the existing Orion™ configuration in consultation with Veolia Water Technologies.

## AI-Driven Microbial Risk Management
Combining Fuzzy Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (Fuzzy-FMEA) with AI, real-time monitoring, and predictive analytics could support earlier identification of potential failure modes, proactive maintenance, and improved operational reliability. System-specific validation would be essential to establish the effectiveness of these approaches and ensure compliance with applicable pharmaceutical water-quality requirements.

## Conclusion
Integrating advanced treatment technologies with evidence-based risk assessment and AI-driven monitoring could strengthen microbial control, improve operational reliability, and support more sustainable pharmaceutical water production. A systematic evaluation of technical performance, regulatory compliance, and lifecycle costs would help determine the most appropriate configuration for each application.
