Interesting article. Most African countries are parsley populated so also in that sense big pumps do not solve the problem.
Static water levels in most African countries are sallow. In Zambia for example in 40% if all ground water sources you find water less than 10 meters deep.
Recently, good and affordable small DC pumps entered the market. They can directly be connected to small solar panels, providing enough water for a few households and a garden. Controllers and pump protection are all build in into one small SMART pump. Keeping it safe and simple to maintain.
SMART Centres have been developing these pumps over many years. The SMART Centre in Zambia for example trained entrepreneurs in installation and repair. These solar powered pumps have become more affordable and popular then common hand pumps. Have a look at our track record at https://jacana.help/mwater.
Many families can now solve their own water problems, without waiting for big funders. Others need a bit of support.
