Most people think a “100-year flood” means it happens once every 100 years.
It doesn’t.
It means there’s a 1% chance of it happening… every single year.
Which also means:
It can happen two years in a row.
Or twice in the same decade.
The name makes it sound rare.
The math makes it sound inevitable.
This is why risk communication matters.
Because when we misunderstand probability, we underestimate exposure.
And that’s when surprises get expensive.
