Water Stress to Intensify by 2050: Balancing Demand and Supply | Alicia Dauth posted on the topic | LinkedIn
⬆️ The demand for water will continue to increase and without meaningful action to manage this demand, we risk following a 'business as usual' trajectory - one of which is water stress intensifies across many regions by 2050. Water stress occurs when the demand for clean, reliable water exceeds the available supply. ⏩ 51 of the 164 countries and territories analyzed are expected to suffer from high to extremely high water stress by 2050.
🛡️ Desalination can shield countries from these physical water challenges but it should not be viewed as eliminating challenges altogether. Rather. some pressures are shifted in other ways such as increased energy demand, greenhouse gas emissions and brine management.
For countries such as the UAE where desalination plays a critical role in security potable water supplies the objective is not to move away from desalination but to continue making it more efficient, sustainable and resilient.
This means looking beyond the water supply itself and considering how we can optimize the entire water system: reducing demand, improving efficiency increasing water reuse, minimizing losses and using resources more effectively.
Desalination is an important tool for water security and is part of the solution but not the whole solution. The opportunity lies in combining desalination and technological innovation advancements with approaches that will build long term security and resilience the region needs.
