BNamericas - Mining industry committed to efficient water...
The mining and metallurgical industry is committed to improving the efficient management of the water it uses in its processes, said the president of the Association of Mining Engineers, Metallurgists and Geologists of Mexico (AIMMGM), Rubén Del Pozo Mendoza.

Regarding World Water Day, celebrated on March 22, the leader of professionals and technicians in the mining and metallurgical industry in Mexico explained that the mining industry uses treated wastewater in its industrial processes and implements closed-loop systems in its operations to reuse the water used in its processes, achieving recovery rates close to 70%.

"One of the goals of mining companies in Mexico is to responsibly manage water to contribute to the health of the population and the preservation of the environment," said the AIMMGM leader.

In the mining units, actions are being implemented to ensure proper water management, such as reducing water consumption through strict controls; using treated wastewater in their operations; reusing process water through closed circuits and avoiding discharges; and implementing new technologies to increase recovery rates, explained Del Pozo Mendoza.

He also said they use real-time monitoring systems to control water use and detect potential leaks or inefficiencies; they adopt cutting-edge technologies such as desalination and wastewater treatment to increase water availability and reduce dependence on fresh sources; and they use new technologies for dust control, thereby reducing water use for this purpose.

In this responsibility that the mining industry has, the collaboration of AIMMGM is fundamental, as it promotes the training of its members in water management issues and raises awareness about the importance of its responsible use.

Del Pozo Mendoza stated that technicians and professionals in the sector are immersed in the research and development of new technologies to improve water use efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

He detailed the distribution of water consumption in the mining sector: 68% comes from the recycling of process water; 2% from wastewater reuse; 21% from groundwater; and 9% from surface water.

In addition, there are mining companies that provide services such as drinking water to communities near their operations and operate 100 treatment plants, which treat wastewater from services, including water from sanitation facilities, operations, cafeterias, camps, and, in some cases, gray and sewage water from municipalities and towns located within their areas of influence.
