**🌍 Introduction**
This CORDIS Results Pack highlights 10 EU-funded projects that are pioneering innovations to ensure Europe’s water security.
**🤝 Coordinated EU Action**
The cornerstone of the EU’s water protection policy is the EU Water Framework Directive 📜, which obliges all Member States to protect and enhance freshwater resources, aiming for a good status for EU waters. This directive covers lakes, rivers, groundwater, as well as transitional and coastal waters. Implementation tools include the River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) and Programmes of Measures, which are prepared in six-year cycles.
**🚀 Spurring Water Innovation Through Technological Progress**
While political action is essential, innovation is equally critical for developing pioneering methods to secure Europe’s water future. This Results Pack features 10 EU-funded projects that are contributing innovative solutions to this effort:
- **🚰 Waste Water Treatment Innovations**:
Projects such as ECWRTI, iMETland, REMEB, and POWERSTEP focus on improving wastewater treatment processes. These innovations aim to enhance recycling ♻️ and reuse of water in industry and agriculture, reduce operational and energy costs, and increase energy production ⚡ in wastewater treatment plants.
- **💧 Agricultural Irrigation Improvements**:
The MOSES and MASLOWATEN projects concentrate on optimizing irrigation in agriculture, achieving greater water and energy efficiency.
- **🌧️ Urban Flooding Mitigation**:
The CENTAUR project addresses the reduction of risks and consequences associated with urban flooding.
- **🔬 Microorganism Detection**:
The CYTO-WATER project has developed a platform for the rapid detection of microorganisms in industrial and environmental waters.
- **🌊 Coastal Subsurface Solutions**:
SUBSOL is bringing innovative coastal subsurface water solutions to the market.
- **🧪 Water Nano-Geotechnology**:
The REGROUND project is advancing a novel water Nano-geotechnology for immobilizing toxic metals in groundwater aquifers, drinking water wells, and river bank filtration sites.
**🔗 Conclusion**
Under the leadership of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, these project goals are in line with the European Green Deal, the New Circular Economy Action Plan, and the EU's zero pollution ambition. Europe is working to ensure that everyone has access to sustainable water resources in the future through concerted efforts and state-of-the-art technical developments.
