The Escondida Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant is located near Antofagasta, Chile. The plant was developed by Minera Escondida with a capacity of 216,000m³/day. It supplies fresh water to a copper mine located 3,100-meter (10, 171 feet) above sea level, 170km (105 miles) southeast of Antofagasta in the Atacama Desert one of the driest areas in the world. Completed in 2017, the SWRO plant, is an expansion of the old 40,000 cubic meters/day (10.6 million gallons/day) plant, is the largest desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere, and the largest desalination plant ordered in 2013. The SWRO Plant was inaugurated on 7th April 2018.
The EPC Contractor Doosan purchased all 48 pumps for the plant from Flowserve, along with 27 dual work exchange energy recovery (DWEER) devices.
