In order to hit net-zero targets, the world will need 2 billion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) by 2050.
For this, lithium supply will be key – some in the industry are predicting a trebling of demand for the so-called 'white gold' that is an essential component of EV batteries. But with production constrained by technological challenges, environmental regulations and geopolitics, the industry is looking for new sources of lithium, or even alternative metals altogether.
