New soil, water, and vapour standards were approved by the province of British Columbia in late October 2016. A huge effort was put into developing scientifically sound standards based on the most up to date research. As a result, CSR numerical standards for some substances have increased reflecting higher allowable concentrations (i.e., less clean-up will be required to meet the new standards), yet for other substances, the standards have decreased (i.e., become more stringent, requiring more clean up to meet the new standards); for many substances the new standards are unchanged from the existing standards; and for a number of newly prescribed substances, completely new standards will be introduced. "
