QTS Pledges $1 Billion to Water Stewardship Projects Worldwide
QTS, a Blackstone portfolio company that operates data centers across North America and Europe, has pledged $1 billion to water stewardship projects worldwide. The commitment is tied to a 2035 goal of restoring, replenishing, or protecting more water than the company withdraws, with funding planned for water infrastructure upgrades, conservation projects, and watershed restoration.
The pledge builds on QTS’s efforts to reduce water demand through its Water-Free Cooling Design. Used by the company since 2019, the closed-loop system does not require ongoing water consumption for cooling and, according to QTS, significantly reduces water use compared with traditional evaporative cooling systems.
Projects will focus on reducing operational water demand, reusing water where practical, and replenishing local supplies. Investments will vary by region and include leak reduction, infrastructure upgrades, wetland restoration, and other conservation work.
Texas provides the first major example. QTS recently outlined $250 million in water infrastructure and conservation investments there over the next decade, including replacing an aging water tower in Turkey, Texas. Another $15 million is planned with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation for conservation and replenishment projects across the state.
“Water is becoming a defining issue for the future of digital infrastructure,” said Tag Greason and David Robey, Co-CEOs of QTS. “We believe the best approach starts with using less water.”
QTS said projects will be developed with community input, with results independently verified and published. The company plans to announce additional water stewardship projects and partnerships as the initiative moves forward.
