Four questions that decide a water treatment media purchase - and the order to ask them in
Most wrong media purchases are not wrong products. They are right products specified against the wrong duty. The questions have a natural order, and the order matters more than the answers.
1. What is the media doing? Separating solids, growing biofilm, transferring oxygen, mass transfer in a tower, or retaining media in the vessel. Pick the duty first - the product follows. The confusion we see most is a biofilm duty treated as a settling duty: a plant short of nitrification buys settling media because the effluent is turbid, when the turbidity is biofilm carry-over.
2. What geometry does the existing structure allow? Basin depth, support beam spacing, manhole size and crane capacity eliminate more products than the process duty does. A 4-5 m basin with a free surface takes lamella media at 60 degrees; a deep tank with screens and a spare blower takes moving-bed carriers at 15-67 percent fill.
3. What will the water do to the material? Published service life for settling media is 3-4 years in polypropylene and 8-10 years in ethylene-propylene copolymer; HDPE carriers run beyond 15 years across 5-60 degrees C. pH range, temperature, solvent list and how abrasive the solids are - those four answers decide the material.
4. Which numbers do you need in writing? Specific surface and porosity, nominal size and tolerance, module dimensions, recommended loading band or fill fraction, service temperature, service life, and the count per cubic metre so the delivered quantity can be verified rather than assumed.
