The man behind affordable water filtration technology: “I admire VinFuture’s vision.”
Professor Thalappil Pradeep receives the VinFuture 2022 Special Award for Scientists from Developing
So what made you decide to continue your partnership with VinFuture?
- The biggest reason is the award's unique mission and vision. For me, science must first and foremost contribute to improving human lives. If science does not contribute to improving human lives, then science has not yet fulfilled its mission. Therefore, the ultimate measure of science is: What positive changes has science brought to human life?
VinFuture has demonstrated that the work being celebrated is not just an invention or an idea, but also the humanitarian purpose behind those innovations. Scientific discovery and social impact are not two separate concepts. I feel extremely honored to pursue and promote that vision.
How does VinFuture's unique perspective influence how he evaluates nominations from around the world ?
In my opinion, the impact of a scientific project is often only fully recognized after many years, even decades. It cannot be measured by the number of international publications, nor can it be confined to a single implementation model. Therefore, when evaluating an innovation, we need to consider many different factors such as the scale of impact, affordability, accessibility, and the level of technology adoption.
I also realized that the transformative impact of science can come from anywhere in the world. My own journey has helped me understand that excellence in science is not limited by geographical boundaries; innovation can emerge anywhere.
