Do we really know where the floating plastic and debris converge in the subtropical regions? Once at sea and near the convergence zones in the subtropics (like in the North Pacific Ocean) it is confortable to imagine that these debris remains there forever... but the dynamics of the ocean is a little bit more tricky. The recent study by Maes et al. (GRL 2018) shows that connectivity pathways for these debris could connect the main convergence zone like between the South Indian and the South Pacific Ocean. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/322757683_A_surface_super-convergence_pathway_connecting_the_South_Indian_Ocean_to_the_subtropical_South_Pacific_gyreMore on the ocean dynamics is needed to be explore to fully understand the fate of marine debris and floatinf plastics.
