Operation & Control of Activated Sludge Plants 8th March 2017, Aqua Enviro Event Suite, Wakefield As manpower at wastewater treatment plants continues to be reduced it is essential that plant operators have a thorough understanding of the principles of plant operation and are able to devise operating strategies backed up by suitable metrics and key performance indicators (KPI’s). This course works through each aspect of treatment plant operation, providing the practical background and worked examples to enable all attendees to put together their own operating strategies and to identify and rectify problems when these occur. Matt’s expertise lies in optimising domestic and industrial wastewater treatment plants to meet stringent discharge consent criteria whilst minimising operating and capital upgrade costs.  His work in the brewing, distilling, pharmaceutical and paper sectors has seen him troubleshoot a range of technologies including sequencing batch reactors, membrane bioreactors, plus traditional activated sludge plants suffering from filamentous bulking.  In the domestic sector he has worked with all of the water companies, highlights include developing a new design and asset standard for selectors to enhance activated sludge settlement, optimising sludge age control to achieve/avoid biological nutrient removal and developing chemical dosing strategies to enhance lamella primary and secondary treatment.  Matt has delivered the course jointly with Nigel Horan since 2009 from Aqua Enviro’s Wakefield base and also at client premises throughout the UK. Rowland Minall MCIWEM, CSci, MSc, BSc(Hons) Rowland is a Chartered Scientist and Process Engineer who has been actively involved in the Municipal Wastewater and Biosolids Industry for over ten years.  His current areas of interest are sludge dewatering, treatment and disposal.  He joined Aqua Enviro in 2013 and has been working to develop wastewater and sludge treatment solutions in the industrial, municipal and waste industries throughout the UK.
