Syracuse, N.Y. -- The new Democratic majority on the Onondaga County Legislature today cast its first vote on Micron Technology, approving a new wastewater district for the chipmaking plant in Clay.
Democrats had said last month they wouldn’t vote on Republican County Executive Ryan McMahon’s proposal for the district until they got more information. Today, they approved McMahon’s plan but said the administration needs to be more transparent in the future.

“We continue to hear that Micron will pay for this, yet we have not seen any user agreements or received any information about the negotiations,” said Chad Ryan, a Democratic legislator. Ryan voted for the district with “the expectation that the county will improve transparency and be more forthcoming with information.”
McMahon’s office said the district is an administrative step that puts the burden of building the plant on Micron and protects county residents from having to pay.
The county is building an industrial wastewater treatment plant that will serve, at least initially, only Micron. McMahon has said the plant would cost $1 billion to build, but county consultants have said it could cost twice that much.
The plant is the last line of defense to keep the toxic chemicals common in chipmaking from being discharged into the Oneida River.
