Over the past few decades, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation has been used as an alternative water disinfection technology. However, a chlorine and UV combination technique may improve the disinfection effectiveness of chlorination and reduce the need for applied chlorine dose in water treatment as compared to standard free chlorine disinfectants, according to a study.
The findings of the research were published in the journal ‘Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering’.
It has been reported that UV disinfection followed by chlorination is applied at more than 28 drinking water treatment plants in the United States. UV treatment has also been increasingly applied to chlorinated swimming pool waters as a secondary disinfection process and a chloramine control strategy.
