The ECI conference on Micro and Nanoparticles in Water took place last week in Davos, Switzerland. This NSF-funded conference began with a keynote from Dr. Kjersti Aagaard (HCA Research Institute and Boston Children's Hospital) speaking on "The Smallest Among Us: Microplastics, preterm birth and early human development." The conference continued with sessions on Policy and Health, Characterization/Modeling, Characterization/Remediation, Analytical Methods, Life Cycle Issues, Surface Water and Groundwater, Mitigation and Recyling, Assessment/Treatment, Personal Care Products, and Science and Technology. Dr. Mark Wiesner (Duke University) gave the closing keynote on Predicting Plastic Fragmentation and Additive Release. The new documentary, Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics was shown and discussed. The full program can be found on the ECI website: engconf.us . Thanks to David Hunkeler (chair) and co-chairs Franco Berruti, Nick Clesceri and Al Gray and all the speakers and participants for a great start to this new ECI series. Stay tuned for the announcement of the second conference in this series.
