Water reuse boosts manufacturing industry amid scarcity in Puerto Rico
The water shortage that Puerto Rico faces forces us to rethink the way in which different sectors use this resource.
During a discussion at the Puerto Rico Industrial Association, specialists agreed that the manufacturing industry has an opportunity to reduce the demand for drinking water through recycling and its reuse in industrial processes such as boiler cooling and production, while maintaining operational continuity, competitiveness and resilience of companies and the Country.
The director of the Infrastructure Committee of the Association of Industrialists of Puerto Rico, Arnaldo Bisonó, explained that any interruption in the water supply threatens that competitiveness and operation, which is why he indicated that these tools and options for reusing or recycling water are important to stay afloat during the panorama that is being experienced.
The president of ETAG Corporation, Albert Ortiz, agreed with him, for whom, given the lack of water, the vast majority of citizens and industrialists have opportunities that, perhaps, they are not exploring.
Water reuse and recycling are viable and proven. Some industries have already taken the step. A factory in Gurabo has a plant where they recycle more than 70% of the water they consume, and that's a huge advantage.
