More than 20% of people in sub-Saharan Africa rely on a handpump as their main source of drinking water. Even as solar-powered systems become more common, handpumps will continue to play a critical role for years to come. Yet rapid corrosion, first documented in the late 1980s, remains a persistent problem in many countries. Despite available technical solutions and recent awareness-raising efforts, the issue continues to affect water supply reliability and sustainability.

This webinar will highlight where corrosion is still occurring, the key risk factors, lessons from countries including Zambia, Uganda, and South Sudan, and ongoing research efforts aiming to tackle the problem once and for all.

The session, moderated by Fadzai T. Munodawafa (HydroLOGICA), will begin with The Context, featuring contributions from Kerstin Danert (Ask for Water Ltd), Gael Jennie Fleurant (Rutgers University), and Donald John MacAllister (British Geological Survey). This will be followed by In-country Case Studies, presented by Javan Nkhosi (Independent) and Ayebale Ared (Welthungerhilfe). Finally, The Future will be explored by Daniel Hudson (University of Strathclyde) and Michael Thibert (World Bank), who will share emerging insights and forward-looking research.

We hope you will join us for this important and insightful discussion on one of the most enduring technical challenges in rural water supply.

Kind regards,
