Yes, but rainwater will extract metals and dissolve the pipes. In addition there are often beneficial nutrients among the TDS. The WHO number of 500 ppm is entirely an aesthetic suggestion, because people begin to notice TDS as it increases above that. We also do not need that sodium and chloride that might make up a portion of the TDS. The calcium and magnesium that can be added from limestone deposits are beneficial. People who live in soft water areas do not have the benefits of the supplemental minerals. There are numerous studies of reduced cardiovascular mortality in areas where the water contains about 10 ppm magnesium. Most people are deficient in magnesium and calcium, so a little supplementation from the water is good. Also, the efficiency of uptake of calcium and magnesium from water is about 60% whereas the efficiency from food is about 15 to 20% , and there are dietary components that prevent some of the uptake. Calcium and magnesium in water would also reduce the uptake of lead since they are chemically similar. In addition, the presence of some of those minerals makes the water less aggressive to plumbing So, the proper mineralization of water is good for many reasons.
