Appreciate the significant role played by citizens, civil societies, media including social media and both the state and the national government in rescue and relief operations When normalcy return, the government must reflect with all seriousness on what went wrong in their approach and in their priority setting to protect lives and livelihood of the people from impacts of water seepage and inundation. As a preventive measure I would like to suggest the following measures to enhance coping mechanism of the people affected by such natural calamities in future Greening of river catchments and river basins Survey of all water bodies in the state to assess their functional capacities & preparation of action plan to restore their functional capacities to meet its very purpose Encourage "green activists" to perform their task to achieve their mandate of clean and green environment Strengthening of river embankments to protect form water seeping into adjoining areas Rehabilitation of people living on either side of the river banks and establishing biodiversity parks on the river banks Revisiting and reshaping the drainage maps of all the vulnerable locations/sites Establishing the Decision Support systems to enhance the coping mechanism of the people and institutions to the impacts of hazards The development and regular testing of warning systems (linked to forecasting systems) and plans for evacuation or other measures to be taken during a Hazards alert period to minimise potential loss of life and physical damage Education and training of officials and the Training of first-aid and emergency response teams Establishment of emergency response policies, standards, organisational arrangements and operational plans Developing activities that are useful for both addressing everyday risks that communities face and for responding to Hazards situations—for example, health, first aid or social welfare programmes that have components useful for Hazards reduction and response. Heavily penalising the business establishments and real estates for encroaching /disturbing the natural driange lines thus preventing the natural water flow Every state to accept and implement the concept of Integrated Water Resources Management with river basin as a unit of planning
