DetoXyFi, originating from MIT, has developed a portable water filter made from scrap wood.  The filter uses the natural processes in xylem in the wood to eliminate bacteria, viruses and protozoa to WHO 2-star Comprehensive Protection standards (log 3 removal), as well as turbidity.

Each filter comes with a 10L bag and can process up to 50L of water berfore being discarded.  Filters use wood that would have been discarded anyway, treated only with warm water and food-safe chemicals.  They are biodegradable and cost low single-digit $ each.  If there is suitable wood in the area, the filters can be made locally; they are in any case very light (a few ounces each) and thus easy to transport.  A product spec sheet is attached.

We are now looking for users in locations without safe water, or disaster responders, to test our product, so that we can build awareness, and start to scale to mass distribution.  We have also attracted the interest of the Indian and US militaries for field and base operations and would welcome further military users - especially as they are often in the front lines of disaster relief.

Samples of filters and bags are available on request.

If you are interested to speak further, please reply either to me directly, or to the names on the attached spec sheet.  Peter Williams (rpwilliams1958@gmail.com)
