Mr. Bruijs has over 20 years of experience working as an impartial Senior Consultant, in the ‘Process & Cooling Water’ group of KEMA / DNV GL and then for Sweco. Starting in 2018, Mr. Bruijs became Principal Consultant and Owner of Pecten Aquatic. He has worked in projects for both (inter)national large-scale industrial surface water users as well legislative/permitting authorities. During his career Mr. Bruijs has been responsible for consultancy and research projects on fish passage at hydropower plants and fish impingement and entrainment at thermal power plant and other industries in the Netherlands. He has carried out both R&D and feasibility studies of fish deterrent systems at water intakes, as well as assessments of the efficacy of Fish Recovery and Return systems. Mr. Bruijs has considerable experience in the assessment and monitoring of biological fouling communities in industrial intake structures/equipment and its impact on commercial operations, including root-cause analyses, troubleshooting and investigations into mitigation options and their optimization, focussed on international projects (Europe, Middle East and Asia). Mr. Bruijs has particular expertise in the ecological and regulatory considerations relevant to new power plant engineering design and assessment, especially in relation to fish impingement and entrainment effects, the use of fish recovery and return, thermal discharge impacts, intake placement and design review, screening and management of debris and jellyfish. He is a (co)organizer and moderator of (inter)national workshops and conference sessions on cooling water and hydropower topics, (co)author of scientific and popular publications, lectures and book chapters on these topics and is managing the European Power Industry Cooling Water Specialists (PICWS) network.
