City sewage was being dumped in the lake, it was a mosquito breeding ground, full of filth, foul smell, insects and carcases of the dead.
It was in this death bed situation of the lake that an NGO called SAHE, stepped in to save the waterbody. About 22,000 people live half a km from the 8 acre lake and SAHE has held 40-50 community meetings to get back the sense of ownership and responsibility. After 10 months of interaction, about 10 tonnes of plastic was removed from the lake in 32 clean-up operations with the support of the communities, to give the lake its present shape.
Once the physical demarcation and restoration work was done, then SAHE started working on the Water quality. Today there’s only one sewage input left out of 24 that existed earlier. But this one input feeds 2 MLD of sewage to the lake every day.
