Riverbed of a river is the lowest point of that area . After monsoon, a perennial river (flowing all 12 months) used to get supply of underground water from both side of the banks. Rivers are running dry, due to over-extraction of groundwater from sideby areas & water table has depleted much below riverbeds & riverbeds are not supplied with groundwater. Moreover barrages or dams have been built on riverbeds which hinders the flow of stream. So to revive these dead rivers we need to recharge ample rainwater underground during monsoon, on lands, along bothsides of the river ( upto 2 km distance from banks) . This will increase soil-moisture of farm land ( thus decrease extraction of groundwater for irrigation) & also increase groundwater table. During course of time - after 7-8 years -when groundwater table will rise more then riverbed, this excess underground water from land on both sides of the river, will keep on flowing in riverbeds & help to keep the streams flowing for longer periods ( even between 2 dams on a river) .
