Depletion of ground water and scarcity of drinking water in India

Published on by in Government

Until and Unless the Modi Govt. restrict the area of high water consuming crops ( sugarcane, rice, etc) like that of Opium, the water crisis in India will continue to expand exponentially

Honourable PM Modi in his Radio Broadcast MAN KI BAAT  told that the cultivators should reduce growing high water consuming crops. He is not a saint, only preaching is not sufficient. He is the elected Prime Minister of India. In addition to expressing his views in public, it is his government duty to work in that direction. What Modi govt. has done in this direction, has not been brought in public notice.

The agriculture sector consumes major portion of the available ground water and surface water in India. Until and unless, the water use efficiency in agriculture sector and areas in which high water consuming crops are grown ( restrictions like opium) are minimized , nothing is going to improve, even interlinking of rivers.

Whether the policy makers of India are waiting for a day when most of the ground water in major portions of India is depleted and is not available for drinking, what to talk for agriculture ?

  1. Yes, i fully endorse the views of Yogesh Agrawal. It may be good idea to source sugar and rice from surplus countries, and offer some direct subsidy to BPL families - the way LPG subsidy is administered - and ask the stakeholders to go for crops which are less water consuming and at the same time generate good cash for them by way of exports or domestic consumption. Opium should be banned outright. Efficient irrigation technologies are other solutions. One example is sprinkler technology usage. Others are installing sensors for soil analysis, weather analysis and then take controlled actions.

    1. You are right Mr Dua. The protection and preservation of ground water needs to be given utmost priority by the Government of India, otherwise there will be no ground water even for drinking. Tamilnadu and Gujarat are already facing sea water intrusion in ground water aquifer in coastal region due to excessive withdrawal of ground water, using deep bore wells.
