It may be good idea to source sugar and rice from surplus countries, and offer some direct subsidy to BPL families - the way LPG subsidy is administered - and ask the stakeholders to go for crops which are less water consuming and at the same time generate good cash for them by way of exports or domestic consumption. Opium should be banned outright. Efficient irrigation technologies are other solutions. One example is sprinkler technology usage. Others are installing sensors for soil analysis, weather analysis and then take controlled actions.

You are right Mr Dua. The protection and preservation of ground water needs to be given utmost priority by the Government of India, otherwise there will be no ground water even for drinking. Tamilnadu and Gujarat are already facing sea water intrusion in ground water aquifer in coastal region due to excessive withdrawal of ground water, using deep bore wells.
