Instead of corn we should be utilizing wastewater treatment facilities to grow algae which should then be converted to biofuels. The wastewater treatment then becomes the nutrient source for the biomass generation. AquaGen/Clearas has developed a vertical pond, photobioreactor system which has proven very effective in this regard. Instead of a field crop, our crop is microscopic and raised in a vertical photobioreactor converting a waste stream to a renewable resource. The effluent from the PBR is available for unlimited re-use including irrigation water or direct aquifer recharge. This is not the answer, it is a part of the answer but it is a very important, very sustainable part.
