Nitrates in the soil are partly used by plants. Under normal conditions rain will leach some nitrates out and into the streams. During droughts there is less rainfall and exxcess nitrates not used by the plants remain in the soil and are drained out by the next rainy period. In simple language the soil is constipated, the rain is the dose you takke to get rid of the excess burden!
