Dear Aisling Horizon... The write up on cause and effect of release of sewage water into open is very nicely described. We have been using simple natural methods on stp in open areas. At the confluence of inflow into a water body a pond or lake, have large dug outs to settle the accumulated sludge. This sludge is desilted and placed on banks for sun drying and lifted out to pits used on co composting with cow dung, agri waste and bio mass. Compost used in agri farms. If the flow is long for say HRT a few days in the pond till it is released downstream, then large boulders are placed with working lengths on its banks for removal of sludge Etc. Next a few large wooden floats are placed for treatment of ww. These floats are replaced with new saplings of elphnt grass. The earlier floats in use are duly harvested and produce used by commujities for cattle poultry Etc. All these produces, water are lab- tested and contol monitoerd by self help groups. Well wishes.
