Pretty devastating for these people. The destruction of their traditional seed varieties was the result of corrupt officials signing deals with Monsanto and their GMO seeds, which now has the blood of hundreds of thousands on their hands. But those who are corrupt don't care about the plight of the poor, as long as they get their share up front. It seems that corruption is the real culprit and the drought is merely revealing the hardship caused by selfish greedy people willing to steal from the most destitute.....how do you ever change that? I find the suicide prevention hotlines kind of ironic. What can they offer to a starving family and reprieve from crushing debt??? Nothing I suspect but encouragement, and that doesn't fill a belly. The most ironic part though is to even think those who merely have a few scraps of clothing and living in a mud hut, would have a cell phone and a mobile package to make the call, as they certainly don't have land lines to those huts. The only thing offered to the poorest in this state to alleviate their desire to end their suffering, would be the money owed them from the work programs or even the food that was promised, and corrupt officials don't care to supply either.
