In the 1970s when Windhoek in Namibia started direct recycling of their treated sewage effluent via their drinking water treatment works, they tested the public's perception of the taste by adding the recycled water to the network only on selected days. They asked the public to phone in and give their opinion of the taste of their water. The recycled water was treated with high lime and activated carbon (not RO). Almost without exception the public phoned in preferring the water on days when the recycled water was in the system.
