UK Startup is Pioneering Novel Technology that Can Generate Electrostatic Energy from Low Pessure Water
Powerfall, a spin-out from telecoms innovator Ziconix, says it can generate electrostatic energy at high efficiencies with water pressure heads of only 50 mbar - equivalent to a 50cm head of water - making it suited to low head hydro applications and energy harvesting.
Matt Sims, business development director of Ziconix and managing director ofPowerfallsaid: "The development of this technology offers the potential to generate electricity from water in many more scenarios than are usually considered. The low pressure head required means that it could be used in rivers with small weirs or with modest tidal flows."
Many people will be familiar with the Kelvin Generator, often referred to as the Kelvin Water Dropper. Ziconix has taken this principle and using TTP Group's patented CSpray technology with other patented improvements has successfully demonstrated that the technology can be scaled for use in practical energy generation applications.
Although the technology will have some applications in Ziconix' sensing and communications business for powering remote Internet of Things type systems, it will have many potential applications for more mainstream electrical generation use.
Justin Buckland, who leads TTP's droplet generation technology development activities, said: "This novel use of our droplet technology is typical of the cross fertilisation we see, combining techniques from inkjet printing with medical, industrial and consumer applications. We look forward to working further with Ziconix and other partners to exploit this exciting technology."
