As natural resource managers—biologists, botanists, ecologists, environmental regulators, hydrologists, planners, petroleum engineers, foresters, and farmers— rely on the analytical power of GIS for help in making critical decisions and manage the earth's resources. I would like to know your experiences and case studies where GIS is used for natural resource management. Here is one case study where GIS is used for "Mapping and Managing Potable Water Infrastructure Assets " http://www.esri.com/news/arcnews/winter0809articles/mapping-and-managing.html

Yes, we should also consider and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of GIS while talking about case studies. I am pointing out some of my views on advantages and disadvantages of GIS, other group members are also welcome to add their point of views and experiences. Advantages of GIS: 1. GIS can integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. 2. GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. 3. GIS helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared. Disadvantages of GIS: 1. Expensive software and need skillful person to handle the data. 2.Requires an enormous amount of data inputs to be practical for some tasks and the more data that is put in 3. The earth is round and geographic error is increased as you get into a larger scale. As I have mentioned in the first point GIS software are quite expensive but we can use the open source software these days like GRASS GIS and Mapserver etc.
